American music lost two luminaries named Cash this past year—one a household name, the other less celebrated but a great talent nonetheless. Within four months of each other, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash passed away—June at age 73 on May 15 and Johnny at 71 on September 12. They had been married for 35 years and had been close friends for more than 40. In life they were inseparable. They made quite a team: June the irrepressible optimist and spontaneous comedian, Johnny the brooding, contemplative artist. They also made quite a bit of music together, more onstage than on record. But most of all they made a life together, one that found the balance point between public display and personal intimacy.
