Tasting Highlights: Portugal
Alentejo comes on strong

Portugal's red table wines have made impressive leaps in quality since the beginning of the millennium. The best have almost exclusively come from the Douro River Valley, home of the nation's famed Port estates. Douro reds, including the top-rated Chryseia, are usually blends of native Portuguese grapes, the most important of which is usually Touriga Nacional. Touriga Roriz, which is Spain's Tempranillo grape, is also an important quality component in many of Portugal's offerings. Now the Douro is getting some competition from the Alentejo region, in the south central portion of the country. Where the Douro is rugged and vertiginous, the Alentejo is characterized by rolling, wide-open terrain. The list of wines that follows includes a good selection of value-priced bottlings that offer a chance to experience the unique flavors of Portugal without emptying your wallet.
