Just as Sean Connery is considered to be the quintessential James Bond, so Kabir Bedi is considered to be the ultimate Sandokan. Based on a series of books written 120 years ago, Sandokan tells the story of a Malaysian Robin-Hood-like pirate. It was made into a television series in Italy in 1976 and a powerful actor was needed to star as the title character. Kabir, who is a native of India, was perfect for the role. When Sandokan premiered, it rocked Italy. He became so popular that he was often mobbed by fans. Once, in Spain, he ran over the tops of cars in a desperate attempt to escape the crowd. He was later summoned to the police station to pay for the damage caused to the vehicles. At airports throughout Europe, women would bare their thighs for his autograph.
